- Description: Every floor plan lies a little. Stairs cannot: they show how a building really moves people from one level to the next.

A floor plan is a promise. It shows rooms as clean rectangles, corridors as neat lines and doors that always open the right way. Stairs are where that promise meets bodies, gravity and time. You cannot draw your way out of a bad staircase.

## A room you only pass through

Nobody lives on a staircase, yet everybody uses it several times a day. That makes it a strange kind of room: one that is judged entirely by how it feels in motion. A good stair has a rhythm you stop noticing after the third step. A bad one makes you look down every time.

The numbers behind that rhythm are old and stubborn. Two risers plus one tread should land close to the length of an ordinary stride. Move away from it and people stumble, slow down or grab the rail without knowing why.

## Where the money shows

Stairs are expensive. They eat floor area on every level and they need structure, light and fire protection. So they are the first place where a budget shows. The cheapest buildings hide the stairs in a closed core. The generous ones put them in the light and let you see the floors connect.

> A staircase is the only part of a building you experience in three dimensions at once.

## What to look for next time

- Can you see where the stair leads before you take it?
- Does the handrail start before the first step and end after the last one?
- Is there daylight on the landing, or only a sign?

## The honest part

You can fake a facade and dress up a lobby. The stair is where the building shows how much it cares about the people inside it. Look at the stairs first. The rest of the building usually agrees with them.
